Belle-Anse, Southeast | Haiti

Project summary

“Initiative for Nature and the Optimization of Ecological and Economic Values (INOVEE)” is the title of a project implemented in the Sud-Est Department (municipality of Belle Anse, 6th Section of Pichon) by the HELVETAS and AHAAMES consortium, with funding from the European Union for the period from December 2023 to November 2025. This project is part of the Global Alliance Against Climate Change’s Support Program for Adaptation and Green Energy Development in Haiti.

This project aims to “reduce the vulnerability of communities in rural and urban coastal areas of the Pichon watershed by strengthening their resilience to the effects of climate change and through improved governance.”
1. Natural ecosystems are strengthened at various levels while creating direct benefits for local communities;
2. Communities seize economic opportunities, strengthen their livelihoods, and enhance their capacity to adapt to climate change;
3. Stakeholders (public, private, and civil society) strengthen their collaboration, develop capacities to engage in decision-making processes, and participate in the implementation of climate change adaptation measures and sustainable ecosystem management;

AHAAMES is responsible for implementing Outcome 2 of this project while maintaining close collaboration and coordination with HELVETAS, which is responsible for the other two outcomes. For this second outcome, the following key actions will be undertaken:

3. Promoting beekeeping through i) an inventory of stakeholders in the charcoal sector and raising awareness of environmentally and financially sustainable practices; ii) training farmers in beekeeping; iii) establishing three beekeeping microenterprises and equipping them with beekeeping supplies; iv) monitoring the operations of the microenterprises;

4. Strengthening agricultural production through i) the rehabilitation and protection of the Préchet irrigation system; ii) the reactivation/commissioning of a composting facility; iii) support for women’s groups in establishing “jaden lakou” through the “Farmer-School-Field” approach; iv) strengthening retail outlets for agricultural inputs.
