Climate protection and climate adaptation through mangrove restoration
An initiative by AHAAMES and Malteser International to respond to the urgent threat of the disappearance of two (2) mangrove ecosystems in Haiti resulting from their accelerated degradation: the Baradères-Cayemites complex (CBC), a marine protected area (MPA) under the supervision of the National Agency for Protected Areas (ANAP), covering 890 km², 2 departments and 6 communes or municipalities (Petit-Trou, Baradères and Grand Boucan in Nippes, and Corail, Pestel, and Cayemites in Grand'Anse); and a mangrove relic located in Village des Rapatriés, in the commune of Cité Soleil, northwest of Port-au-Prince, in the West department. This project is being carried out with funding from German Cooperation (BMZ) over four years, between 2021 and 2024.
This project was intended to help reverse the ongoing degradation of the two ecosystems (at the CBC, the intervention focused on a portion of two of the three municipalities, namely Petit-Trou and Baradères) through a technical synergy between AHAAMES, ANAP, and a Colombian NGO, ABIUDEA, as part of a South-South cooperation initiative.
