PETIT-TROU DE NIPPES, HAÏTI.

In the heart of Jeanty, a rural community located in the third communal section of Petit-Trou de Nippes, 35 women gathered to mark an important milestone: the completion of the first year of the Village Savings and Credit Association (AVEC), a community savings and credit initiative aimed at promoting financial inclusion and resilience. In the face of widespread economic hardship in Haiti, lending and savings programs can have a transformative effect, stimulating entrepreneurship and household stability.

Launched in June 2024 as part of AHAAMES' food security and nutritional recovery program and funded by Malteser International, the initiative was designed to support communities still grappling with the aftermath of the 2021 earthquake that devastated infrastructure and social systems.

AHAAMES' AVEC group is one of eight groups operating in the region, providing women with access to financial services through collective savings and low-interest loans.

“Before, I didn't even know programs like this existed,” said Rosemarie, the group's treasurer. “Now I can borrow to support my activities and feel more empowered.”

Every Wednesday, members meet to buy shares, review loan progress, and manage their common fund. Over the past year, the Jeanty group has accumulated 577,110 Haitian gourdes, allowing members to invest in small businesses, agriculture, education, and livestock.

“This is the first time I've been able to save regularly,” said Solange, a member of the group. “Unlike loans from private individuals, we have up to three months to repay our loans, which is life-changing. It really changes your life.

Beyond access to financing, the program offers training in fund management, record keeping, and strategic planning - skills that have strengthened participants' confidence and standing within their communities.

The conclusion of the first cycle was celebrated at a ceremony during which members reviewed their progress, redistributed savings and interest, and set new goals for the next cycle. According to Yvio, the project manager, the initiative's main mission remains clear: “To build an economic safety net for women by empowering them to take control of their financial future.” As the second cycle begins, the women of Jeanty continue to demonstrate solidarity, financial well-being, and a common purpose.
